With the introduction of the Samsung c417, the “basic” handset has been forever redefined. Samsung has taken the most popular features–Bluetooth wireless technology, a VGA camera, instant messaging, and a speakerphone–and added a beautiful 2-inch, 65K color display, and quad-band world coverage. Yet, with all that power and functionality, the c417 still comes in an ultra-thin, ultra-stylish package. It’s the perfect choice for the Cingular value-inspired customer who wants a full-featured phone at an affordable price.
Design
The c417 sports a slim, sleek clamshell design with a large 128 x 160 color display with over 65,000 colors. A supplementary, 96 x 64 monochrome OLED screen on the front of the cover keeps you up to speed on time, date, battery and signal strength, and more. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side of the phone, while most of the phone’s features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset’s control pad. There’s also a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets, while the phone’s charging port is placed on the bottom of the unit.
Calling Features
With a big 500-contact address book, the c417 is designed to hold all of your important calling information. The phone also features 40-chord polyphonic ringtones, and in addition to the built-in ringers, you can download additional ones from Cingular’s MEdia Net service. A vibrate alert silently notifies you of incoming calls when you want to be discreet, and a handy speakerphone lets you talk hands-free or hold conference calls. Meanwhile, ringer and picture ID lets you assign photos and ringtones to callers.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
Powerful messaging and Internet capabilities are built into the c417. Support is provided for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound, and video via MMS messages. Instant messaging is also supported via the AOL and Yahoo! messaging clients. There’s even a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing if you opt for the MEdia Net service from Cingular. MEdia Net lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit–a plus for mobile text messaging users.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the c417 including a calculator, an alarm, a voice memo recorder, a to-do list, and a calendar.
Entertainment
The c417 takes pictures the way you want to take pictures. The phone allows you to choose from four different picture resolutions, and sports a digital zoom feature. And don’t forget, the built-in self-timer allows you to get yourself into the picture. The c417 also allows you to set screensavers, themes and wallpapers to suit your tastes. The phone is Java enabled as well, meaning the phone supports games written on the Java platform.

I got this phone three weeks ago from the cingular store. For basic cell phone use, it’s perfect. I had none of the reception problems that the other guy who wrote a review is having. The more advanced features like camera and internet aren’t great at all, but I dont care – I’m just making phone calls. I made a full review and took pictures of me opening the box and a bunch of the phone, you can see it here: [.....]

I recently went through two of these phones in a very short period of time. Both had the “insert SIM card” message many, many other people had complained about. The first phone I purchased had a brand new SIM card in it. When I took it back, they replaced the SIM card and within days, I was getting the “insert SIM card” message again. I brought the phone back and asked for a replacement. They gave me another brand new phone and within days, it too was telling me to “insert SIM card.” When this happened, calls could not be made or received and the only fix was turning the phone off or on. After the second phone failed, I took it back and got an LG. I have had no problems with that.
After seeing how many people have had this same problem, I’m surprised Samsung continues to sell this phone. They must be aware of this widespread problem.
This was my first experience with a Samsung product. It will be my last.
DO NOT buy this phone.

I have now received my second Samsung C417 phone from Cingular that has a problem with the Sims Card. I’m not sure why Cingular is selling a product that does not work with their service. The only option after purchasing this new phone is to take a refurbished phone. Not a very fair practice. Now I know why Cingular is giving them away…4 at a time!

Did it ever occur to you that if you are using the same SIM card over multiple phones and the phones keep messing up, could it possibly be the SIM card that is bad? I had the SIM card problem with this phone and I took it back to the Cingular store and they told me I had an old SIM card, so they replaced it and I haven’t had a problem in months.

I have bad signal or non at all in places where I used to have signal all the time. A co-worker had the same problem and told her to return before 30 days(wish I had) – Can’t change the screen menu. The camera button goes off all the time (badly situated). Not a good ringtone listed. Battery marker will have 3 bars and then none. Can’t wait to change it!
