I was thinking this was a GOLDEN item because the reviews are all solid and glowing with greatness. This microphone simply did not work for me. By the looks of it, it appears that I have received a defective microphone – returning it will prove more expensive than just buying another, more respectable microphone. Another flaw is that the picture displayed for this item does not match the item that I received. Maybe I received the wrong microphone from the company.

This is the second external mic and switch I have bought for my iPhone and Bose in-ear headphones. The first one had the jack on the plug, and I had two wires running together to the separate mic and switch, with the earphone wires continuing on (much longer). This proved somewhat difficult to keep streight and untangled, and forced me to run the earphone wires around the back of my neck to keep them from dragging the mic/switch off my shirt collar. It also was a fairly large protrusion from the top of the iPhone, an opportunity to damage the earphone jack on the iPhone by accidentally hitting against the fairly large plug assembly.
This product takes the ‘inline’ approach, i.e., the jack is at the end of the wire with the switch and mic. I think it would have been much better if the jack was on the same side as the incoming wire to the iPhone, but instead it is on the opposite side, so the earphone wire continues on in the opposite direction from the iPhone wire. Considering how this is used (clip to your shirt), it would have made mroe sense to have both wires leaving the mic/switch unit in the same direction, but it is workable the way it is, and I like it better than the parrallel wire approach.
A critical issue is sound quality for the mic. It has great audio quality – better than the standard earphone set that comes with the iPhone. It also has a volume control ont the side. This is a blessing and a curse. A blessing because you can quickly reduce volume without taking the iPhone out of your pocket. A curse, because if you forget you have the volumne down in the mic/switch unit, you will be wasting power by boosting volume on the iPhone. It is easy to imagine forgetting you have the volume reduced, or even accidentally reducing the volume (or even turning it off completely) and then wondering what is wrong with your iPhone. It would have been great if Apple allows you to remotely control volume, but then, that would require plugging into the larger connector at the bottom of the iPhone.
If you decide you get better headphones for your iPhone because you want better sound, or even if you just want better voice quality for your phone calls (you can plug in your Apple earphones and use them with this product), this is a good choice.

This is an excellent product for the iTouch 2nd generation, works unbelievably well. It is a super value and the 3rd party vendor shipped on day of order. If you plan to use it a lot, for the price order two since unique products like this fade out as the technology changes or products improve. The iTouch 3rd Gen comes standard with a microphone in earbud cord, for example. Order back-ups one for home, office, car would be a good idea. You can use it to dictate emails which is a whole lot easier than punching on a keyboard the size of silver dollar.You can use the DRAGON application to do even more. It is a great time saver.
